CAIRO—A powerful council of Egypt’s top military commanders is backing defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sissi for president, the country’s state-run news agency said Monday, in a move likely to entrench the military’s political power and intensify its battle with an increasingly sophisticated Islamist insurgency.
